Sweet
Sweet fragrances are the most immediately accessible and broadly appealing in all of perfumery, drawing on sugary, candy-like, and confectionery notes that trigger deeply pleasurable sensory associations. The accord ranges from delicate (faint honeyed floral sweetness) to intensely sugary (pure cotton candy and pink sugar), with the most interesting territory lying between the two extremes.
The sweet accord became a dominant force in fragrance from the mid-1990s onward, driven by the gourmand revolution and the success of fragrances like Moschino Cheap and Chic and Angel. Ethyl maltol (the molecule that smells like cotton candy) and various lactones and vanillic materials are the building blocks. The challenge in sweet fragrances is always balance: sugar with no counterweight quickly becomes cloying.
Sweet accords pair naturally with floral, vanilla, fruity, and gourmand notes. If you love sweet fragrances, explore vanilla, gourmand, fruity, and caramel accord families.
