Musky

Musk is one of the most fundamental building blocks in all of perfumery: a diffuse, skin-close note that amplifies everything around it. Originally derived from the musk deer gland (now banned), musk in modern fragrance comes entirely from synthetic molecules, each with slightly different profiles ranging from clean laundry to warm, animalic depth.

A well-constructed musky accord creates a scent that seems to emerge from the wearer's own skin, which is the reason musk is so powerfully attractive and universally appealing. Clean musks dominate mainstream fragrance and are specifically engineered to smell like a warm, just-showered body. Dirty or vintage musks skew more animalistic and challenging.

Musk is rarely a standalone accord as it enriches and extends everything it touches. Fans of musky fragrances often overlap with powdery, soapy, amber, and woody families.
